Alternate Investment funds is unconventional type of investment which collects funds from sophisticated investors either from India or Foreign to investment in accordance with the defined investment policy.


This AIF doesn’t include the funds cover under SEBI. AIF can form as a Company which required according to AIF regulations. SEBI has been declared different categories for applicant to register as AIF.

Category I includes

In this Category – AIF called VCF who invest in start-ups with high growth prospects, AIFs who are known as angel investors who invest in budding start-ups which is not usually fund by venture capital investors, and AIFs called social venture investors who actively invest in socially responsible business.

Here, the companies with average growth will reinvest in expansion, research and development which is usually known as growth funds. And some investors will invest in infrastructure companies that involves in railway construction, port construction, etc. These funds are the infrastructure funds.

This Category includes some listed securities such as Private equity funds – funds invest in unlisted private companies, and Debt funds – invests in debt securities of unlisted companies. This also includes derivative instruments such as shares, government securities or G-secs, Debentures, Mutual funds, ETFs, and foreign stocks or bonds.
